Meta Unveils Muse Image AI: Public Instagram Photos Can Now Be Used for AI Image Generation

Meta has announced Muse Image, its first image generation model developed by Meta Superintelligence Labs. Alongside the new AI model, the company has introduced a feature that allows Meta AI to reference public Instagram photos when generating AI images—unless account owners choose to opt out.

The feature is rolling out across Meta AI, Instagram, and WhatsApp, giving users more creative ways to generate and edit images while also introducing new privacy controls for Instagram users.

What Is Meta Muse Image?

Muse Image is Meta’s latest AI-powered image generation model designed to create and edit images using natural language prompts. It powers several new AI features across Meta’s platforms, allowing users to generate original visuals, modify existing photos, and experiment with different artistic styles.

According to Meta, the model is capable of understanding detailed prompts and combining multiple visual elements into a single image.

Public Instagram Photos Can Be Used in AI Images

One of the biggest additions is support for public Instagram content.

When creating an AI image, users can mention a public Instagram account in their prompt. Meta AI may then use publicly available images from that account as visual references while generating the requested image.

This functionality is designed to make AI-generated content more personalized and visually relevant.

However, the feature only applies to public Instagram accounts.

Instagram Users Can Opt Out

Meta has also introduced controls that allow Instagram users to decide whether their public content can be used for AI image generation.

Users can disable this option through Instagram’s Sharing and Reuse settings.

Alternatively, switching an Instagram account from public to private will also prevent future AI image generation based on that account’s publicly shared content.

Meta notes that AI-generated images created before a user changes these settings will not be removed.

The company also says users will not receive notifications if someone creates an AI-generated image using content from their public Instagram profile.

New AI Image Editing Features

Beyond generating new images, Muse Image also introduces advanced editing capabilities.

Users can edit photos using simple text instructions, such as:

  • Removing unwanted objects
  • Changing backgrounds
  • Placing themselves in different locations
  • Applying artistic styles
  • Combining multiple images into one composition

The AI can also generate graphics containing readable text that matches the requested design.

Image Editing With Drawing Tools

Meta has added an interactive editing feature that allows users to draw directly on an image to highlight the areas they want to modify.

Instead of restarting the editing process each time, users can continue making changes within the same conversation, creating a more seamless editing experience.

AI Effects for Instagram Stories

Muse Image also powers more than 30 AI-generated visual effects for Instagram Stories.

These effects allow users to experiment with different artistic looks and creative styles directly within Instagram.

The AI model is also available in Meta AI chats on WhatsApp in selected countries, with broader availability expected over time.

Preset Creative Prompts

To help users get started, Meta has introduced several preset prompts for common creative tasks.

Examples include:

  • Restoring old family photos
  • Trying different hairstyles
  • Transforming images into clay animation
  • Creating retro video game-inspired artwork
  • Redesigning rooms using furniture and products found online

These templates are intended to make AI image creation easier for users who are new to generative AI.

Muse Video Is Also in Development

Meta confirmed that it is also working on Muse Video, an AI model focused on video generation.

While no launch date has been announced, the company says additional AI-powered creative tools will continue expanding across its ecosystem.

Where Is Muse Image Available?

Muse Image is currently available through:

  • Meta AI
  • Instagram
  • WhatsApp (selected countries)

Meta plans to expand support to:

  • Facebook
  • Messenger
  • Advantage+ Creative for advertisers

The rollout will happen gradually across supported regions.

Free to Use With Optional Subscription Benefits

Meta says Muse Image is available free for everyday AI image generation through Meta AI.

Users who require higher usage limits or additional AI capabilities will be able to access them through Meta’s subscription offerings.

Final Thoughts

With the launch of Muse Image, Meta is expanding its AI-powered creative tools across Instagram, WhatsApp, and Meta AI. The new model brings advanced image generation and editing capabilities, while also introducing a feature that allows publicly shared Instagram photos to be referenced during AI image creation.

At the same time, Meta has added privacy controls that let Instagram users opt out or make their accounts private to prevent future use of their public content for this purpose. As generative AI continues to evolve, these new features highlight both the growing creative possibilities and the importance of giving users greater control over how their public content is used.
